Federal Government Bargaining Update #1

Dec 16, 2010

The Union met with employer representatives from December 6 to 10 inclusive.  Prior to this meeting, both the union and the employer agreed to an “expedited” process whereby each party limits discussion to key issues.

In spite of this agreement, very little progress was made at the table.  The employer tabled proposals with very little justification or data to support the problem they were trying to solve.  And the information they did have was incorrect.  To make matters worse, the employer’s position is that any negotiated settlement must include concessions on severance pay.  Finally, they were unwilling (or unable?) to give serious consideration to any of the issues brought forward by the union.

In as much as the government says they want quick settlements and serious discussions on important topics, their actions say the opposite.  It is clear they were unprepared to have meaningful discussions with the IBEW.

Our next scheduled bargaining session will take place from January 10 to 14, 2011.  Let’s hope the employer comes prepared with their homework completed.

In solidarity,
