Federal Government Bargaining Update #5
The union and the employer met face-to-face on August 26, 2011. The meeting follows several months of informal discussions. The purpose of these discussions was to determine where the parties might reach an agreement.
It is evident the parties are still far apart on two key issues: wages and severance pay. However, in an effort to “move things along”, the union tabled a comprehensive package signalling the terms for a favourable settlement. The package includes:
- Modest wages increases that take into account the employer’s need for fiscal restraint but also take into account the rising costs of goods and services;
- Modest increases in premiums and benefits that are of particular importance to our group;
- Some of the employer’s demands which have the effect of modernizing the collective agreement without any significant reduction in benefits.
The union’s package does not include any of the hard-line concessions demanded by the employer.
The parties are scheduled to meet again on October 11 where the employer is expected to table a response to our package.
